STANDING UP TO HURRICANES. The ALUPROF MB-37 Slide Storm

ALUPROF is debuting the MB-37 Slide Storm, a sliding patio and balcony door system created for markets where extensive spans of glazing have to withstand the powerful pressure of hurricane-force winds. The solution primarily fits the expectations of clients in the United States and fulfils the exacting standards in place there.

The system makes it possible to create structures that offer state-of-the-art contemporary style and are economical at the same time, earning clients’ appreciation not only for their notably high resistance to extreme weather, but also for how convenient the door is to use. It features a panel depth of 37 mm and a frame depth of 100 mm, along with thickened divisions. The maximum dimensions for a structure are a width of 3200 mm and a height of 3000 mm, with a panel weight no greater than 160 kg and glazing ranging from 14 to 19 mm. Since hurricanes form over bodies of water with a high temperature, it is a cold system, with no thermal breaks.

The MB-37 Slide Storm meets the standards set by ASTM International (formerly known as the American Society for Testing and Materials) and Florida Building Code standards TAS 201-94, TAS 202-94 and TAS 203, which apply to buildings in Florida, where additional hurricane protection is required. The results achieved by the structure during tests carried out in the USA by Molimo, an independent, accredited laboratory, allow it to be used in regions with a high or very high hurricane risk, including Zone 4, where wind speeds exceed 274 km/h (170 mph).

This new sliding patio and balcony door was designed not only to withstand the high pressure of hurricane winds, but also to resist impacts from objects and debris carried by the elements. As a result, the MB-37 Slide Storm makes an effective contribution to protecting lives and property. Tests have also confirmed that the structures retain their air- and watertightness even in the event of severe damage to the profiles and glazing However, the test report states that, in order to meet the stringent requirements, it is essential to use two 6mm TVG glass panes with 2.28 mm PVB film or 3 x 0.76 mm SentryGlas Plus film.

This latest system from ALUPROF provides manufacturers with an opportunity to streamline. No time-consuming mechanical processing is necessary, making prefabrication simple and fast. The MB-37 Storm Slide can be used to fabricate A, D, K and C designs.
