Innovative solutions of roof covers for the BALTIC ARENA stadium in Gdansk.

Aluprof was awarded a contract in a public procurement procedure for the supply of aluminium systems for the Baltic Arena in Gdansk, one of the stadiums to hold the EURO 2012 sporting events. The Baltic Arena  surprises with its shape, resembling a piece of amber which opens up in every direction towards the surfaces surrounding the stadium, bringing to mind flowing, shimmering  “streams”. Thus formed “streams” help create the concept of open space with these rounded, compact “precious stones” of different functions and effects, gliding in a way across the stadium.

The construction of the stadium in Gdansk commenced on December 15, 2008 and its completion is planned for January 21, 2011. The whole investment  will cost PLN 630 million. The stand is big enough to seat 44 thousand spectators, who will watch the first football match in summer 2011.

Aluprof designed a new roof cover system especially for this investment. Quoting Dariusz Rusniok, the Chief Constructor of façade systems, in view of non-standard shape and lightness of the cover, a decision was made to use polycarbonate and aliminium profiles. To seal the structure and to enhance its resistance a special purlin profile of “T” type was designed. Widening of the profile made it possible to apply  a double sealing system.

High tightness requirement set for the roof cover resulted in  closing the roof edge  with “F” shape profile and a supporting profile, thus tightness in the gutter region was attained.

While designing solutions to meet the requirements imposed on this kind of facility, the proximity of the sea environment had to be taken into account, hence  we had to raise the bar to the highest position with regard to the quality requirements. All connecting members were made of the top quality steel  of grade A4/70, adds Dariusz Rusniok. His words may be testified by very good  resistance and tightness results of the tests carried out in an independent  notified institute in Warsaw. Such tests  ensure high quality during many years’ operation of such  type of roof cover.
