Acoustics in architecture – the challenges of contemporary projects

chevron-up
DO GÓRY
Today, acoustic design is no longer limited to concert halls or recording studios. Good acoustic conditions are just as important in homes, open-plan offices, hotels and schools. Excessive noise can lead to fatigue, concentration problems, and even long-term health effects. That is why it is so important to incorporate solutions at the design stage that limit the transmission of external sounds and reduce reverberation inside rooms.

Aluminium – lightness, aesthetics and noise protection

Although aluminium products are most commonly associated with durability, aesthetics and large glazed areas, they also offer significant potential for acoustic protection. Thanks to the advanced design of the profiles and the use of appropriate glazing and seals, modern aluminium windows, doors, façades and partition walls can effectively reduce external noise.

Key elements enhancing noise protection:

  • Profiles with thermal breaks and air chambers – improve both thermal and acoustic insulation.
  • Highly elastic seals – minimise sound transmission at the junction between the sash and frame.
  • Use of double-glazing units with acoustic laminate (PVB) – significantly reduces noise coming from outside.
  • Appropriate system installation depth – greater profile thickness allows for the installation of glazing units with better acoustic performance.

Aluminium products offer not only aesthetics and durability, but also an effective acoustic barrier that enhances interior comfort.

Aluprof products – an effective barrier against noise

Aluprof’s range includes aluminium components that meet the high demands of developers and architects in terms of acoustic comfort. One example is the MB-104 PASSIVE windows, which offer very low U-values whilst allowing for the use of glazing units with high acoustic insulation. The precise design of the profiles and modern seals allow for effective attenuation of external noise, enhancing comfort in demanding conditions.

The MB-SR50N aluminium façade is ideal for office blocks and public buildings. Thanks to its high thermal insulation and the option to combine it with sound-absorbing glazing, it provides effective protection against noise. This is particularly important in urban environments. Among the interesting options is also a version of internal glass walls with enhanced sound insulation – the MB-HARMONY DUO model, which combines functionality with a high level of noise protection and aesthetic appeal. They achieve sound insulation coefficients of up to Rw 48dB and Ra1 up to 46dB. Double-glazed partitions are ideal for spaces where acoustic comfort is just as important as practicality and design.

Acoustic comfort and aesthetics – no compromise is necessary

One of the greatest advantages of modern aluminium products is the ability to combine high sound insulation with an elegant and minimalist appearance. In projects where slim frames and large glazed areas are essential, aluminium allows for the creation of lightweight and stylish structures with excellent insulating properties. Aluprof products offer aesthetics refined down to the last detail, whilst maintaining excellent noise reduction performance, making them an excellent choice for both luxury residences and modern urban buildings.

How to design quiet and comfortable spaces?

To fully exploit the potential of aluminium products in designing spaces with excellent acoustic insulation, it is worth, right from the concept stage:

  • consulting with the aluminium system manufacturer regarding possible glazing and profile configurations;
  • taking the building’s location into account – the noise reduction strategy will differ on a busy street compared to a quiet suburban area;
  • consider integrating additional elements that enhance noise protection – such as external roller shutters, façade blinds or partition walls with enhanced insulation.

A design that takes all these aspects into account will create a space that is not only aesthetically pleasing, but above all quiet and comfortable for its users.

Silence is a luxury – let’s design consciously

Aluminium products offer not only aesthetics and durability – they also provide real added value in the form of improved acoustic comfort. Contemporary architecture is increasingly moving towards creating sustainable, healthy and user-friendly spaces. As a modern and versatile material, aluminium fits perfectly into this trend. It is therefore worth designing spaces with not only what we see in mind, but also what… we do not hear.
