How to protect a building from overheating without air conditioning – design strategies featuring aluminium

Rising temperatures and increasingly frequent heatwaves during the summer months mean that thermal comfort inside buildings is becoming one of the key challenges of modern architecture. However, there is an increasing search for alternatives to energy-intensive air conditioning – solutions that allow rooms to be kept pleasantly cool in a passive, eco-friendly and aesthetically pleasing way. One material that fits perfectly with this philosophy is aluminium.

Aluminium – an ally of modern architecture and energy efficiency

Aluminium is a material that combines high durability, weather resistance and precision of workmanship with the ability to create lightweight yet technologically advanced structures. This makes it the ideal basis for solutions that help protect interiors from excessive heat build-up, whilst maintaining a modern façade appearance. Aluprof’s range includes many products that support so-called passive building cooling – from sunshades to advanced façade structures and joinery with excellent thermal performance.

SkyFlow façade blinds – light and temperature control

One of the most effective ways to limit overheating of rooms is the use of SkyFlow façade blinds. Thanks to the ability to adjust the angle of the slats, the user can precisely control the amount of sunlight entering the room, thereby reducing heat gain on hot days. These blinds are installed on the outside of the building, blocking solar radiation before it reaches the glass, and thus before the heat has a chance to penetrate the interior. This not only improves thermal comfort but also protects furniture and furnishings from fading. Additional advantages of SkyFlow blinds include aesthetic appeal and the ability to integrate with building automation systems, allowing the position of the slats to be adjusted to current weather conditions.

External roller blinds – classic protection with a modern twist

An equally effective way to reduce overheating is to use Aluprof external roller shutters. They create a thermal barrier which, in the summer months, keeps the heat out, whilst in winter helps to reduce energy loss. The roller shutters can be controlled automatically – for example, using sunlight sensors – allowing for dynamic responses to changes in the weather. Importantly, they are available in various installation options (surface-mounted, adaptable, flush-mounted), making them suitable for both new buildings and the refurbishment of existing structures.

MB-SR50N aluminium façades – architecture that works with the sun

In modern office buildings and public facilities, façades play a key role, as they must combine aesthetic qualities with energy efficiency. The MB-SR50Nmullion-transom wall from Aluprof allows for the creation of glazed façades that simultaneously provide a high level of thermal insulation and the possibility of integration with sunshades. Thanks to the use of special thermal breaks and structural solutions, it effectively minimises heat transfer into the interior, whilst maintaining excellent airtightness and durability.

Increasingly, however, insulation alone is not enough – the façade is intended not only to limit energy loss, but also to generate energy. With such projects in mind, the MB‑SR50N PV photovoltaic façade was developed, representing an evolution of the well-known mullion-transom system and enabling the integration of PV panels directly into the curtain wall structure. This solution enables the creation of zero-energy façades using both transparent and opaque panels, whilst maintaining the consistent geometry and aesthetics of a glazed façade. It is an example of how advanced aluminium technology can become part of sustainable architecture.

MB-104 Passive aluminium joinery – maximum insulation without compromise

In energy-efficient and passive buildings, where every element matters for energy efficiency, window and door joinery plays a crucial role. MB-104 Passive aluminium windows and doors are premium-class products characterised by excellent thermal insulation performance. Combined with appropriate glazing and the use of external shading, they form a coherent system that protects the interior from overheating, whilst reducing energy consumption across the entire building.

Climate-conscious design

The key to protecting a building from overheating is an integrated design approach. Even at the concept stage, it is worth considering:

  • the building’s orientation in relation to the cardinal directions,
  • the selection of partitions with an appropriate heat transfer coefficient,
  • the use of sunshades and modern aluminium systems,
  • the possibility of automatic control of roller shutters or blinds.

Thanks to such solutions, the need for air conditioning can be significantly reduced, thereby lowering energy consumption and CO₂ emissions.

Aluminium, due to its durability, malleability, modern character and recyclability, is becoming one of the most important materials in contemporary sustainable construction. Aluprof products – such as SkyFlow façade blinds, external roller shutters, MB-SR50N and MB-SR50N PV façades, and MB-104 Passive window and door joinery – enable the creation of buildings that protect against overheating in a natural and energy-efficient way. This proves that thermal comfort does not have to go hand in hand with high energy consumption – all that is needed is well-designed aluminium technology.
