Silence in the city (and beyond): how does aluminium support great insulation in buildings?

DO GÓRY
There are many benefits to living in a big city, but it can be tiring at times. One of the problems for those who live in the city center, for example, is high noise exposure. If you want to avoid the noise and enjoy pleasant silence in your home, be sure to have good sound insulation in your building. This is where effective window soundproofing plays a key role. Check out why aluminium-framed models are the best choice in this respect!

Why do you need to keep excessive noise away from your home?

Being constantly exposed to noise can be detrimental to your health. Regular exposure to sound levels in excess of 75 dB (this is the limit for what is known as “sound pollution”) is assumed to adversely affect people’s psyches and make their lives less comfortable. It is difficult to relax in such conditions and almost impossible to fully recover. Another negative consequence is the real risk of progressive hearing impairment.

If you live on a busy city street and you open the windows facing the street, the noise entering your home will be close to this level: at around 70 dB. Near urban intersections, on the other hand, average sound levels are around 78 dB. As we are exposed to these sounds on a daily basis, it makes sense to take care of the effective sound insulation of our home so that we can have some respite from the noise.

Note that the sound pollution is also a problem for those living in smaller towns and even in villages. Exposure to excessive noise levels is a problem for houses located near:

  • expressways and highways,
  • airports,
  • large manufacturing plants, and more.

Noise in residential buildings: what are the acceptable standards?

The Polish legislation sets standards for noise levels that can be found inside residential buildings. The limit under this legislation is 40 dB during the day and 30 dB at night. These two values are deemed to be safe for humans, i.e. even with prolonged exposure to them, they have no adverse effects on our mental or physical health.

Unfortunately, architects are sometimes not very attentive to issues related to the sound insulation of planned residential buildings, especially single-family houses. Its effectiveness needs to be adapted to the conditions of the site where the building is to be erected, and this requires some extra work.

How can a single-family house be soundproofed?

The soundproofing of a house is largely related to insulation. Commonly used materials for this are polystyrene and mineral wool, which have excellent thermal and sound insulation properties.

Other materials used for this purpose include:

  • soundproofing underlays for floor coverings,
  • polyurethane foam for ceiling insulation and soundproofing,
  • façade acoustic plasters (their porous texture is excellent for sound dissipation).

It is also vital to use the right windows in the house to ensure that it remains pleasantly quiet. When choosing them, it is important to take note of the thermal insulation parameter (abbreviated as Rw). You can learn more about it in the article on noise resistance of aluminum windows.

Why do aluminium windows support the sound performance of a building?

By effectively reflecting sound, aluminum reduces the amount of outside noise reaching the building’s interior. Significantly, windows made of this material feature a special thermal barrier and properly shaped seals, as exemplified by the MB-SLIMLINE model. Both of these considerably limit the escape of heat from a house while effectively dampening sound.

But what has the most impact on the sound insulation level of a window is the window glass. The more chambers it has, each filled with various gases, the more effective the silencing. What is also important is that it should be made of layered glass. Such solutions can be put to good use in aluminium windows. For instance, MB-79N windows make it possible to install both single-chamber and double-chamber thick glasses, providing excellent sound insulation, in addition to thermal insulation.

Choose modern aluminium windows from Aluprof, and enjoy real peace and quiet in your home!

Joinery represents a crucial element of any building, for it is through this that most noise from the outside can infiltrate into a building. If you want to make your home effectively soundproof and enjoy blissful peace and quiet, even in an extremely noisy area, do not hesitate to invest in aluminium windows. Choose Aluprof solutions, which are valued for their superior performance in terms of both sound and thermal insulation. Furthermore, our systems are exceptionally long-lasting, their modern design adding visual interest to your interiors and façades.
